Piersimone was born in Rome. He began his musical journey under the guidance of M°Gianni Oddi (First alto sax in Rai Orchestra, has performed with Gil Evans, John Lewis, Ennio Morricone, Dizzie Gillespie, and many others), focusing on classical studies for saxophone and choosing from the beginning the baritone saxophone as his main instrument.

After having profounded his technical studies (thanks to an intense work on French classical methods such as Ferling, Mulè, Bozza) he devoted himself to transcribing solos of the greatest jazz saxophonists (with particular attention to specialists on baritone saxophone such as Harry Carney and Serge Chaloff ). Particularly he focused his attention on Pepper Adams, who surely has been his biggest inspiration with regards to sound as well as harmony. Another great influence on his perception of jazz has been the studies of the masters of the Swing and Be-bop era, such as Sonny Stitt and Wardell Gray, from whom he surely has gotten his approach “tenoristic” applied on baritone saxophone.

With regards to this, Maurizio Giammarco writes about him in the liner notes of  ACUD quartet’s cd :

”..Within the relatively narrow panorama of baritone saxophonists, Piersimone Crinelli has created himself a well recognizable identity thanks to a very personal sound, particularly powerful, precise and to a modern phrasing with tenoristic articulations”.

He attended clinics and master classes at the best jazz schools in Rome (Saint Louis School of Music, Università della Musica, SPM Testaccio); he studied  functional harmony, improvisation and analysis of jazz solos with M° Claudio Pacifici; parallelly he started his concert activity playing in local jazz clubs where he had the opportunity to meet some of the most skilled musicians in Italy. The acquaintance with the celebrated sax player Steve Grossman (one of the most important contemporary jazz musicians, during his career he performed with Miles Davis, Tom Harrell and Johnny Griffin), with whom he attended clinics and workshops, has been crucial for his musical development. He attended clinics with the great pianist/teacher Barry Harris, developing the bebop language on baritone saxophone. He also attended Berklee School of Music clinics,studying with Andy McGhee, Dino Govoni, Bruce Gertz.

In 2015 he earned a Master’s degree in Improvisation graduating from the University of Gothenburg,  Sweden,(Hogskolan for scen och musik), under the guidance of Anders Jormin and Anders Hagberg.

His great instrumental flexibility has enabled great collaborations in diverse musical contexts:

in classical music he has performed with M°Luis Bacalov, Ialsax Quartet, M°Andrea Morricone, M°Armando Trovaioli;
in jazz music with many internationally well known artists such as Bob Mintzer,Tullio de Piscopo,Vince Benedetti, Riccardo del Frà, Rosario Giuliani, Maurizio Giammarco;
in Rhythm n’ blues with several American musicians such as Junior Watson, Mitch Woods, Lynwood Slim, Eddie Floyd, Herbie Goins, Sax Gordon;
in pop music with Dolcenera, Noemi, Neri per caso, Rosalia de Souza, Malika Ayane, Jarabe de Palo, M°Roberto Pregadio, M°Federico Capranica;
in theatre shows with Loretta Goggi, Enrico Brignano, Claudio “Greg” Gregori.
